Hidden Behind a Smile

Sometimes,
it’s with the warmest smiles
that the cruelest words are dealt.
Killing blows,
where one expects kindness.
And because they are dubbed ally,
whether friend or family,
you believe them
never seeing
the knife they’ve left in your back.
By the time the damage is realized,
it’s too late;
the eyes you look through
are skewed.
You don’t look outwards
for the poison;
you assume that it’s you.
You
must be the one
who’s damaged.
After all
you’ve heard it all along,
and they’re the ones
who care for you;
why would they
steer you wrong?

Prompt: Warm Smile, Cruel Words
