Dressed in White

She looked at herself in the mirror
and felt as a shiver ran through her.
This wasn’t how
she thought it’d be,
all dressed in white
at twenty-three.
She steeled her nerve
and raised her head
then prepared herself
to join the man she’d wed.
Her heart cried for the man she’d lost,
the country’s price
too high a cost.
It should’ve been him
she’d give her hand to,
but he was gone
and there was much to do.
Her soul was heavy
as she walked the aisle,
the walk was short
but felt like it went on for miles.
When she passed her parents,
they looked so proud.
With an empty voice
she made her vows.
This wasn’t how
she’d thought it be,
all dressed in white
at twenty-three
married to the man
she’d tried to leave.

Prompt: Dressed in White
